This seminar is the first part of the module "Japan's Videogame Culture“, which aims at discussing and exploring videogame cultures in Japan. The seminar offers an introduction to game studies and to the history of videogames in Japan. Participants will review existing literature and establish a general sense of what videogame culture is in the context of contemporary culture, and how we might approach it. In the last weeks of the course after the Christmas break, each participant will engage in preparing and collecting ideas for an individual, empirical research project on a self-chosen question that will be used as a basis for the practical engagement with games in the second course of the module (summer semester 2019), in which we will play and analyze game contents.
